Camps

On our mountain biking safaris, we often camp in the bush in our own specially designed “Fly Camps”. But this doesn't mean you have to 'rough it'. Two people share a spacious four-man dome tent, mattresses and pillows are provided. The group shares a shower tent. Camp chairs are set out around the fire where you can enjoy an evening 'sundowner' and a tasty freshly cooked meal. We keep the camp light so it can be packed quickly and will fit into the support vehicle, leaving enough room for any biker who needs a lift.

On many safaris we can also offer accommodation for some nights in luxury lodges or tented camps. We can adjust the level of accommodation to suit your style and budget.

While biking, the location for our camp depends on the route and what's available. At times we may pitch camp near a Maasai homestead, at others in an area completely isolated from human contact. Sometimes we use land designated by villages as campsites. On longer trips we include several nights in permanent tented camps or lodges for that extra bit of comfort. Toilet stops while cycling are the nearest bush or tree! We provide a small shovel for digging holes and carry toilet paper to camp, where it is burned. We take great care not to spoil the environment, and we always leave our camp sites clean and intact.

Food is prepared fresh each day by our camp cook. The evening meal includes soup, main course, dessert and tea or coffee. Breakfast is cooked to your order; eggs, sausages, bacon, with fresh fruit and toast. A packed lunch is prepared in the morning for the midday stop. The camp crew is friendly and you are welcome to lend a hand if you like, but it is not required. Enough water is carried for two full days. There is a fridge on the support vehicle for the luxury of refreshing cold drinks. We carry a ‘Pur’ water filter to ensure we always have plenty of clean safe drinking water, but if you prefer to drink bottled water it is available for sale.

The camp is generally set up before you arrive. We aim to arrive at camp by 5pm to give you time to settle in before dark. Even in Africa it can get chilly at night, so a sweater or fleece is useful. You will receive a checklist of items to bring when you book your trip.

Animals are often heard at nighttime – hyenas, jackals, foxes and birds are most common, in addition to the ever-present chorus of crickets. However don't worry our biking trips do not take place in areas where there is any danger from wild animals. Kerosene lanterns and the campfire provide lighting in camp, but these don't detract from the awesome African night skies. We are but specks in the vast African wilderness. This is an experience you'll never forget.
